Description of God's Country: Folk Art & Short Stories Based on Childhood Memories of Frizzleburg, Pennsylvania
Many years ago my wife had an operation which required much healing time for her at home. During this time of healing she needed a lot of care. As I helped nurse her back to health, I found myself with more time on my hands than normal. I quickly felt inspired to begin experimenting with painting saw blades as well as layers of wood I cut out in my workshop. The folk art paintings featured in this book were created based on memories of my past growing up in the small Village of Frizzleburg, Pennsylvania. Most who know me wouldn’t envision me painting or writing but these outlets have become therapeutic for me. When I created them my intention was to help relay to my children what my childhood was like, never guessing they would be shared with anyone. But as time went on I desired to also share these with some family and friends and so this book was created to do just that. These stories are not to be considered historical truths as much as they are memories of mine from my childhood as I attempt to bring them to life through my painting and writing. As memories go, the details of this collection of short stories are what my mind has allowed me to remember. The details are simply my perspective and may not be the shared perspective of others. I am grateful to share my fond memories of Frizzleburg’s past as I remember it. Whether you are from Frizzleburg or not, I hope this book helps stir up memories of your childhood. Years ago, a man passing through the area shared with me that he believed this land was God’s country - that always stuck with me. God’s country is every country but it was sure nice to hear his thoughtful sentiments about our small village.I have gratitude for this land but it is never far from my thoughts that this land was once Native American land. It pains my heart to think of the lives that were potentially lost over the settlers taking over the area we now know as Frizzleburg. I hope the spirits of the Native Americans don’t hold it against those of us who are here now.Charles J. Bell
