The Lost Man

Description of The Lost Man

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERTwo brothers meet in the remote Australian outback when the third brother is found dead, in this stunning new standalone novel from Jane HarperBrothers Nathan and Bub Bright meet for the first time in months at the remote fence line separating their cattle ranches in the lonely outback. Their third brother, Cameron, lies dead at their feet. In an isolated belt of Australia, their homes a three-hour drive apart, the brothers were one another’s nearest neighbors. Cameron was the middle child, the one who ran the family homestead. But something made him head out alone under the unrelenting sun.Nathan, Bub and Nathan’s son return to Cameron’s ranch and to those left behind by his passing: his wife, his daughters, and his mother, as well as their long-time employee and two recently hired seasonal workers. While they grieve Cameron’s loss, suspicion starts to take hold, and Nathan is forced to examine secrets the family would rather leave in the past. Because if someone forced Cameron to his death, the isolation of the outback leaves few suspects.A powerful and brutal story of suspense set against a formidable landscape, The Lost Man confirms Jane Harper, author of The Dry and Force of Nature, is one of the best new voices in writing today.

Golden State

Description of Golden State

From award-winning, New York Times bestselling novelist Ben H. Winters comes a mind-bending novel set in a world governed by absolute truth, where lies are as dangerous as murder. In a strange alternate society that values law and truth above all else, Laszlo Ratesic is a nineteen-year veteran of the Speculative Service. He lives in the Golden State, a nation standing where California once did, a place where like-minded Americans retreated after the erosion of truth and the spread of lies made public life and governance impossible. In the Golden State, knowingly contradicting the truth is the greatest crime -- and stopping those crimes is Laz's job. In its service, he is one of the few individuals permitted to harbor untruths, to "speculate" on what might have happened. But the Golden State is less of a paradise than its name might suggest. To monitor, verify, and enforce the truth requires a veritable panopticon of surveillance and recording. And when those in control of the facts twist them for nefarious means, the Speculators are the only ones with the power to fight back.

Though more than thirty years her senior, Gabe, a handsome corporate finance attorney, seems like the perfect candidate, and within a month, they are madly in love. At least, Nat is…Gabe already has a family, whom he has no intention of leaving. So when he abruptly ends things, Nat can’t let go. The Crime of Aggression: The Quest for Justice in an Age of Drones, Cyberattacks, Insurgents, and Autocrats (Human Rights and Crimes against Humanity)

Description of The Crime of Aggression: The Quest for Justice in an Age of Drones, Cyberattacks, Insurgents, and Autocrats (Human Rights and Crimes against Humanity)

Review 'Noah Weisbord has written as masterful an account of the century of legal toil dedicated to corralling the human urge to wage war as has yet found two covers . . . . Weisbords work is that rarest of writings on legal matters: a kind of Decameron, a thoughtfully interconnected set of what might well be abstruse concepts, but told as a series of parables, aperus, and case studies.'---Brendan Howley, Literary Review of Canada'A remarkable insiders account of the historical efforts to criminalize wars of aggression.'---Payam Akhavan, Global Justice Journal'[This] insightful book . . . offers a valuable and provocative thesis . . . . The time is ripe to align with thinkers such as Weisbord, who advance a bold step forward for the restoration of relative peace rather than descend in a hopeless spiral of endless, grievous aggression against fellow human beings.'---Shelley Walia, Frontline Read more Review This engrossing book puts a human face on the crime of aggression.?David Scheffer, author of All the Missing Souls: A Personal History of the War Crimes Tribunals'With the rules-based global order under siege, The Crime of Aggression is a timely and valuable reminder of the powerful potential of international law. Weisbord's realistic but optimistic grasp of world politics offers a better way to deal with the worst of the worst, even as he argues for us all to fashion strong institutions for a more just world.'?Guy Lawson, New York Times bestselling author of War DogsWeisbord provides a remarkably accessible account of the effort to impose individual criminal liability for the waging of wars of aggression. This rich, multilayered book is a welcome addition to the scholarship on the crime of aggression and the history of international law more broadly.?Payam Akhavan, author of In Search of a Better World: A Human Rights Odyssey'A delight to read. This remarkable book provides a breathtaking account of the fight for the rule of law in international affairs. Noah Weisbord is an idealistic realist, a sharp legal mind with an acute sense of history.'?Peter Leuprecht, author of Reason, Justice, and Dignity: A Journey to Some Unexplored Sources of Human RightsHow much suffering must we endure before learning that law is better than war? Giving an insiders account of the long struggle to make aggression a crime, Noah Weisbord traces politicized negotiations across decades even as nations acquired nuclear bombs and pushed aggression into cyberspace, biological weapons, and drones. Today, groups smaller than states can wreak devastating violence around the world, but Weisbord holds out hope that law can reframe politics and aggression.?Martha Minow, Harvard Law School'Noah Weisbord brings us an essential eyewitness account of the drama surrounding the crafting of the law against crimes of aggression. Drawing on his own experiences as a participant in those historic proceedings, he describes how advocates of the rule of law struggled to universalize the Nuremberg principle of holding political leaders?not nations and citizens?accountable for unjust wars.'?Harold Crooks, award-winning screenwriter of Pax Americana and the Weaponization of SpaceA highly informative, beautifully written, compelling account of what the activation of the International Criminal Courts jurisdiction over the crime of aggression means in a world of evolving technologies and new paradigms of war making. Weisbords vivid contextualization of critical issues based on detailed real-life case studies is both riveting and insightful.?Donald M. Ferencz, Middlesex University School of Law and University of Oxford A book of singular importance, intelligence, and insight, on a subject of enduring significance.?Philippe Sands, author of East West Street: On the Origins of Genocide and Crimes against Humanity Read more About the Author Noah Weisbord is associate professor of law at Queens University in Canada and served on the International Criminal Courts working group that drafted the crime of aggression. He lives in Kingston, Ontario. Read more

The Cult of the Constitution

Description of The Cult of the Constitution

Review 'Mary Anne Franks has written a powerful challenge to the prevailing constitutional orthodoxy of the right and the left. Her trenchant critique of progressives' naive devotion to America's flawed founding charter is provocative and persuasive. A deeply troubling and absolutely vital book.' (Mark Joseph Stern Slate)'The Cult of the Constitution shows how gun violence, racism, and misogyny are linked by a 'fundamentalist' interpretation of First and Second Amendment rights. Like all fundamentalism, this one tends to reinforce the interests of the powerful and to perpetuate inequality. It doesn't have to be this way. At this moment of #MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter, and #NeverAgain, Mary Anne Franks' book is a necessary reassessment of constitutional orthodoxy. A powerful must-read.' (Tamara Piety author of Brandishing the First Amendment: Commercial Speech in America)'Uncompromisingly critical, Franks challenges both liberal and conservative views of the Bill of Rights in the name of equality. Rights that don't work for the least powerful will ultimately work to preserve the privileges of the most powerful; agree or disagree with Franks's conclusions, her arguments require attention.' (Rebecca Tushnet Harvard Law School)'This is a worthy addition to the literature of critical legal studies?and a timely text as battles over the Constitution and its interpretation continue to rage.' (Kirkus Reviews)'The Cult of the Constitution is an extremely important book. Franks challenges scholars and supporters of 20th century liberal constitutionalism to acknowledge its shortcomings in dealing with the technological and social-media-driven realities of the 21st-century....[She] has forced open a new and vital debate about rights, liberties and constitutional government.' (Mark Rush Law and Politics Book Review)'In this timely book, Mary Anne Franks takes on some of our most divisive constitutional issues. She analyzes gun restrictions, free speech, and regulation of the internet with a firm command of the legal implications and human stakes of judicial decision making. An important and insightful book.' (Deborah L. Rhode Stanford Law School) Read more About the Author Mary Anne Franks is Professor of Law at the University of Miami School of Law and President and Legislative & Tech Policy Director at the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative (CCRI). Franks' writing and research have been featured in Time, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and The Guardian, among other outlets. Read more

Kafka's Last Trial: The Case of a Literary Legacy

Description of Kafka's Last Trial: The Case of a Literary Legacy

Review Fascinating and forensically scrupulous. - John Banville, The GuardianA tale pitting two Goliaths against one octogenarian David, untangled in exacting, riveting detail. [A] must-read. - Rebecca Schuman, SlateThoughtful and provocative. - Ruth Franklin, The Wall Street JournalA gifted cultural historian with a scholarly sensibility. - Lev Mendes, The New York Times Book ReviewAbsorbing. Balint elegantly intercuts courtroom scenes with episodes from Kafkas biography and cultural afterlife. He brings out every paradox of a judicial process that tried to tie down this most ambivalent of authors, the ultimate disaffiliated pariah, to a fixed identity. Balints scrupulous and sardonic prose makes you love Kafka, and dread the law. - The EconomistThough Benjamin Balints masterful hunt for Kafkas rightful ownership begins as a local dispute in an Israeli family court, it soon thickens into modernitys most bitterly contentious cultural conundrum. Who should inherit Franz Kafka? The woman into whose hands his manuscripts fortuitously fell? Germany, the nation that murdered his sisters but claims his spirit? Israel, asserting a sovereign yet intimate ancestral right? Searing questions of language, of personal bequest, of friendship, of biographical evidence, of national pride, of justice, of deceit and betrayal, even of metaphysical allegiance, burn through Balints scrupulous trackings of Kafkas final standing before the law. - Cynthia Ozick, author of Foreign BodiesThrilling and profound, Kafkas Last Trial shines new light not only on the greatest writer of the twentieth century and the fate of his work, but also on the larger question of who owns art or has a right to claim guardianship of it. Benjamin Balint combines the sharp eye of the courtroom journalist with the keen meditations of a literary and cultural thinker, and his research and lively intelligence deliver insights on every page. - Nicole Krauss, author of Forest DarkKafkas Last Trial is a fascinating inquiry into?and meditation on?the nature of artistic genius and the proprietary claims any one individual or country has on the legacy of that genius. Benjamin Balint is both a superb investigative journalist and a gifted cultural critic. This is that rarest of books: a scholarly work that is also compulsively readable. - Daphne Merkin, author of This Close to Happy: A Reckoning with DepressionSuperb. Beautifully crafted, with just the right ratios of empirical-legal information, intellectual history, critical awareness of Kafka and his work, and wise reflection. It is obviously the product of admirably patient research and rare dedication to quality control. - Stanley A. Corngold, professor emeritus of German and Comparative Literature, Princeton UniversityA highly entertaining story of literary friendship, epic legal battles and cultural politics centered on one of the most enigmatic writers of the 20th century. [A]n exquisitely human drama peopled with an eccentric cast of characters that beautifully evokes the early days of Israel, the sadness of the exiles, and the long shadow cast by the Holocaust. - Guy Chazan, Financial Times Read more About the Author Benjamin Balint is a research fellow at the Van Leer Institute in Jerusalem. The author of Running Commentary and coauthor of Jerusalem: City of the Book, he writes for The Wall Street Journal, Die Zeit, and the Claremont Review of Books, and his translations from the Hebrew have appeared in The New Yorker. Defenseless Under the Night: The Roosevelt Years and the Origins of Homeland Security

Description of Defenseless Under the Night: The Roosevelt Years and the Origins of Homeland Security

In his 1933 inaugural address, Franklin D. Roosevelt declared that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Yet even before Pearl Harbor, Americans feared foreign invasions, air attacks, biological weapons, and, conversely, the prospect of a dictatorship being established in the United States. To protect Americans from foreign and domestic threats, Roosevelt warned Americans that "the world has grown so small" and eventually established the precursor to the Department of Homeland Security - an Office of Civilian Defense (OCD). At its head, Roosevelt appointed New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia; First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt became assistant director. Yet within a year, amid competing visions and clashing ideologies of wartime liberalism, a frustrated FDR pressured both to resign. In Defenseless Under the Night, Matthew Dallek reveals the dramatic history behind America's first federal office of homeland security, tracing the debate about the origins of national vulnerability to the rise of fascist threats during the Roosevelt years. While La Guardia focused on preparing the country against foreign attack and militarizing the civilian population, Eleanor Roosevelt insisted that the OCD should primarily focus on establishing a wartime New Deal, what she and her allies called "social defense." Unable to reconcile their visions, both were forced to leave the OCD in 1942. Their replacement, James Landis, would go on to recruit over ten million volunteers to participate in civilian defense, ultimately creating the largest volunteer program in World War II America.Through the history of the OCD, Dallek examines constitutional questions about civil liberties, the role and power of government propaganda, the depth of militarization of civilian life, the quest for a wartime New Deal, and competing liberal visions for American national defense - questions that are still relevant today. The result is a gripping account of the origins of national security, which will interest anyone with a passion for modern American political history and the history of homeland defense.
